Samsung Galaxy Player 70 captures vision of Android-ruled world in new promo video

It's getting a bit tough to tell Samsung's various Galaxy Players and their changing names apart these days, but the company has found a fairly unique way to drum up attention for its new Galaxy Player 70 model, which looks to be nearly identical to the Galaxy Player 5 being released over here. Mixed into an otherwise bright and cheery new ad are images of what we can only presume is an alternate reality where the Android robot is real, and in charge. Head on past the break to see for yourself.

Verizon's Samsung 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot launches March 31st

By Chris Ziegler posted Mar 27th 2011 1:33PM Though it won't be the first Verizon LTE device to share its white-hot connection over WiFi (that honor goes to the recently-launched Thunderbolt), Samsung's SCH-LC11 -- announced back at CES -- is shaping up to be the network's first dedicated hotspot to hit retail. We've just been dropped the carrier's internal equipment guide showing a launch date in all channels (stores, telesales, and online) this coming Thursday, March 31st; pricing is an open question, but carriers tend to price these modems pretty aggressively on contract since they know they're going to eat you alive with the data plan for the next two years. Of course, in this case, we're more than willing to get eaten alive if it means we've got a 20Mbps WiFi connection in our pocket at all times.

Snoop Dogggg goes 4G to celebrate launch of Samsung Galaxy Indulge, was probably paid more than 4Gs to do it

By Darren Murph posted Feb 23rd 2011 8:04PM You laugh, but D-O-Quadruple-G does have a certain ring to it. In fact, it sounds a little like the ringing of Samsung's Galaxy Indulge, which is tucked inside the pocket of MetroPCS' CEO right about now. You see, the aforesaid carrier has presumably paid Snoop Dogg (or Snoop Dogggg, as he'll be known until he scurries outside of a 4G coverage area) to change his name in order to celebrate the commercial launch of the world's first LTE Android smartphone. The Froyo-based phone is just barely beating out LG's Revolution and HTC's Thunderbolt, and you can bet that MetroPCS is doing everything it can to let the world know about it. Taking things one step further too far, Snoop's also appearing in a new series dubbed "The G-Connection," and you can peek the first episode just after the brizzle. For rizzle, homedizzle.
METROPCS ANNOUNCES NEW COLLABORATION WITH ICON SNOOP DOGG

Superstar adds more Gs to his name to help introduce the Samsung Galaxy Indulge, the world's first commercially available 4G LTE Android smartphone, available exclusively from MetroPCS

DALLAS, February 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ - Snoop Dogggg has doubled down on his G's through his new collaboration with MetroPCS to introduce the new Samsung Galaxy Indulge™, the world's first commercially available 4G LTE Android™ smartphone offered only with 4GLTE service from MetroPCS.

"It feels good to be working with MetroPCS and Samsung for the launch of the Galaxy Indulge. I'm stepping it up to 4G's so my phone can keep up with my demanding, always-connected lifestyle," said Snoop Dogggg.

Fortunately, any consumer can indulge in the 4G lifestyle like Snoop Dogggg because MetroPCS offers 4GLTE smartphone service plans at about half the cost of other carriers' 4G smartphone service plans today. With $50 and $60 plans, including all applicable taxes and regulatory fees, MetroPCS delivers unmatched value with unlimited talk, text and 4GLTE Web page browsing, along with data access to streaming audio, video and gaming content, downloads and Android applications on the Galaxy Indulge.
"Indulge With Snoop Dogggg" Sweepstakes

The superstar's fans can win a rare chance to meet Snoop Dogggg up close and personal by entering the "Indulge with Snoop Dogggg" sweepstakes exclusively at any MetroPCS retail store through March 31 (no purchase necessary to win). One winner will walk away with a VIP trip for two to a Snoop concert this summer, including airfare and incidentals, front-row tickets and backstage passes, as well as two Samsung Galaxy Indulge smartphones with MetroPCS 4GLTE service. More details are available at http://www.metropcs.com/snoop-dogggg-vip-rules.
Video Series

The collaboration also features Snoop Dogggg starring as several characters in the online video series called "The G-Connection," which is based on popular dating game shows from past decades. The videos also feature rapper and producer Warren G, model Brittany Dailey, and the man with the "Golden Voice," Internet sensation Ted Williams. The videos were directed by Estevan Oriol, partner at SA Studios. The first of three episodes premieres today at www.youtube.com/MetroPCS.
Additional Chances to Win

In addition, MetroPCS and Samsung are offering more chances to win autographed Snoop Dogggg gear, Samsung Galaxy Indulge smartphones and MetroPCS 4GLTE service on MetroPCS' Facebook page at www.facebook.com/metropcs (no purchase necessary to win). MetroPCS is also offering prizes through giveaways in many of its home metropolitan area markets, including signed "The Doggumentary" CD's (in stores March 29th).

"We are very excited about teaming up with Snoop Dogggg to show consumers that they can have it all with MetroPCS 4GLTE services and the vast possibilities of the Samsung Galaxy Indulge Android smartphone," said Phil Terry, senior vice president, corporate marketing, MetroPCS. "Snoop is a great match for our brand and appeals to all of our customers, who want the latest high-end Android smartphones with 4G services at the best value."
About the Samsung Galaxy Indulge

Powered by the Android version 2.2 (Froyo) operating system (OS), the Galaxy Indulge delivers quick access to more than 200,000 applications from the Android Market™ and complete access to Google Mobile Services, as well as a combination touch screen/QWERTY keyboard, 3 megapixel camera and camcorder with auto-focus, music player, Stereo Bluetooth® capabilities and expandable memory storage up to 32GB. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 hitting Vodafone Portugal in March for €699

By Joanna Stern posted Feb 23rd 2011 12:11PM We've been waiting for the pricing and availability pieces of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 puzzle, and a short press release from Vodafone Portugal seems to at least help fill out the edges. While we thought Vodafone's UK branch had exclusive dibs on the 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet, it looks like it will be hitting Vodafone Portugal first in March for €699. That's not exactly a bargain, but it's in line with the pricing of the other Android tablets overseas. Now, if only we knew more about when this one was going to learn English and hit the US. As always, we're digging as hard as we can on that one.

Updated: It looks like Vodafone Spain announced pricing last week, too. Our friends at Engadget Spanish report that the tablet will go for €349 on-contract sometime this spring.

Microsoft pulls Windows Phone 7 update from Samsung phones until it can resolve issues

By Vlad Savov posted Feb 23rd 2011 7:23AM Such a big load of trouble for such a small update. Microsoft's first WP7 firmware refresh has been causing some unfortunate brick-like behavior in Samsung Omnia 7s and the company has wisely decided to pull the new software back until it can correct whatever's going wrong. An official communiqué to WinRumors says Microsoft has identified the issue at hand and is working to correct it and redistribute the update as soon as possible. For any Samsung WP7 phone owners who haven't been able to resuscitate their device yet, the advised course of action is to go back to the store and swap it for a livelier one.

Update: Timo wrote in to let us know that some people are still seeing the update. If that's you, you'd be advised to hold off.

Samsung Captivate update to Froyo pegged for tomorrow, February 24th (update: HTC Aria update coming 'very soon')

By Chris Ziegler posted Feb 23rd 2011 11:32AM One false alarm is bad enough, but two would be positively evil, wouldn't it? We're cautiously optimistic that Samsung and AT&T are serious this time about posting the Captivate's update to Android 2.2 starting tomorrow, another step in Sammy's long, drawn-out road to getting all of its promised Galaxy S upgrades out the door. We're sure owners are going to appreciate some of the simple pleasures in life that Froyo (and Gingerbread) owners have come to take for granted like being able to move apps to external storage... and it's all just hours away. Can you feel the excitement?

Update: in an official Facebook video just posted, AT&T mentions that it's already in the process of testing a Froyo upgrade for the HTC Aria as well -- and it should be coming "very soon."

Samsung dubs its mobile processors Exynos, dual-core 4210 (formerly Orion) arriving next month

Samsung Assigns New Nomenclature to Application Processor Family

SEOUL--(Korea Newswire) February 11, 2011 -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced a new brand name for its application processor family. Exynos will be applied to Samsung's application processors, which are designed to power mobile devices such as smartphonesand tablets.

"Application processors for the mobile market are one of the flagship products in our semiconductor business," saidSeh-Woong Jeong, executive vice president of marketing, System LSI Division, Samsung Electronics. "We are excited to introduce the brand name of Exynos for Samsung's application processorfamily. As consumers demand more from their mobile products, Samsung's Exynos chips will be the power inside enabling the coolest HD multi-media features with even longer battery life."

Exynos associates Samsung's "smart and green" strategy adopted by its semiconductor devices and solutions developed specifically to support the stringent performance and power requirements of mobile devices. Smart refers to high-performance aspect and Green represents low power features of Samsung's application processors. Exynos originates from the Greek words smart (exypnos) and green (prasinos).

The new naming system will be first applied to the dual core processor codenamed Orion, which was announced in September 2010. Carrying the name Exynos 4210, Samsung's powerful 1GHz dual-core application processor is scheduled for production next month.

Samsung Galaxy SL drops AMOLED for Super Clear LCD, Hummingbird for OMAP3

By Nilay Patel posted Feb 2nd 2011 3:59PM You're Samsung, and you want to make sure you have enough still-limited S-AMOLED displays for the upcoming Galaxy S 2, but you don't want to discontinue the original Galaxy S. What to do? Well, you could always take a cue from the Galaxy S-based Russian Nexus S and use an LCD instead-- and so here we have the Galaxy SL GT-i9003, which is destined to hit the Middle East and Asia with both a Super Clear LCD and a processor swap from Sammy's Humingbird to a 1GHz TI OMAP 3630, along with a bump in thickness and weight due to a slightly larger battery. Apart from that it's pretty much just a Galaxy S, all the way down to the maddening stagnation on Android 2.2 -- but hey, give us 2.3 (or even 3.0) on the Galaxy S 2 and we'll be all smiles and giggles.

Update: BestBoyz got a Vodafone price list that seems to indicate that the SL will hit Germany as well. Achtung, AMOLED fans!

Samsung Teases Galaxy S Successor [VIDEO]

If this teaser video is any indication, Samsung will be showing off its Galaxy S2 phone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in less than two weeks.

Samsung has had great success with the Galaxy S series of phones, with 10 million units sold in just seven months.

Samsung’s strategy with the Galaxy S in the U.S. was to offer a different variation of the same device on each of the four major mobile operators. Samsung further augmented that strategy by partnering with Google on the Nexus S phone released in December 2010.

The teaser video is short on details, but the clip does insinuate that the Galaxy S2 will feature a very slight profile. Samsung will be streaming the unveiling of the new Galaxy S on February 13. Mashable will have staff on the ground at MWC and we will be bringing you our hands-on reports with the new device.

Sexy, Super-Thin Samsung Displays Coming to CES

They’re thin, unusually attractive, and some are remarkably flexible. Yes, supermodels, but also Samsung Mobile Display’s next-generation video screens, debuting next week at the Consumer Electronics Show.

While they won’t be available on smartphones or HDTVs yet, Samsung’s two prototypes will be flaunting some impressive tech, according to GizMag. The smaller of the two is a 4.5-inch flexible display that’s just 2mm thick, and it can be curled up like a Fruit Roll-Up, winding up into the diameter of a McDonald’s drinking straw.

The larger of the two displays won’t be flexible, but the 19-inch prototype rocks a mind-boggling resolution that’s four times higher than your garden-variety HDTV. What would you do with this transparent video screen that still lets light shine through even when it’s turned off?

These two screens are the first examples of the next generation of Active Matrix OLED (AMOLED) technology. The displays have a super-thin organic layer of luminescent material that uses less energy and delivers higher contrast and better color than conventional LCD displays. Non-transparent versions are commonly used now in mobile devices, and big-screen varieties are on their way to a home theater near you.

Sony’s offered a display with an earlier generation of the technology for the past three years, but the steep $2,500 retail price (you can get it for $1800) for the Sony XEL-1’s 11-inch screen is a tough sell. Even though it’s not cheap, I can tell you from firsthand experience that its little screen has unmatched color saturation, contrast and sharpness. Sony’s good at this technology, showing the most impressive 3D screen I saw at last year’s CES, a super-sharp and bright 24.5-inch prototype.

Didn’t we see something like this in science fiction movies? It won’t be a fantasy for long — as soon as display companies perfect their manufacturing techniques, economies of scale will take over, bringing prices for these fantastic displays down to a reasonable level. When will these screens become ubiquitous? My guess: Give them three years, and huge, ultra-flat and maybe even transparent screens like this will be commonplace.

Check out the enlarged teaser pic below:

Samsung says it's sold 600,000 Galaxy Tabs worldwide

Samsung said it expected to sell a million Galaxy Tabs this year, and it looks like it may not be far off that mark, if it doesn't exceed it -- the company has apparently told The Korea Herald that it's sold 600,000 of the tablets worldwide so far, less than a month after launch. That includes 30,000 units sold in Korea since its November 14th launch there, but Samsung doesn't seem to be dishing out specific numbers for the rest of the world just yet. Of course, as impressive as that is, it may well be all downhill from here once word of Russian president Dmitry Medvedev's frown gets around.
